Pete Hegseth is an Army National Guard veteran, former Fox News host, and author who has led the U.S. defense department since January 2025 — first as the 29th Secretary of Defense, then, after the department's September 5, 2025 rename, as Secretary of War.[3]
Hegseth was commissioned as an infantry officer in the Army National Guard after graduating from Princeton University in 2003, and deployed to Guantanamo Bay, Iraq, and Afghanistan; his awards include two Bronze Star Medals, the Joint Commendation Medal, two Army Commendation Medals, the Combat Infantryman Badge, and the Expert Infantryman Badge.[3] He joined Fox News as a commentator in 2014, co-hosted Fox & Friends Weekend from 2017 until his 2024 nomination, and has authored five books, including the New York Times best-seller The War on Warriors (2024).[3]
President Trump nominated Hegseth for Secretary of Defense in November 2024. His confirmation process drew scrutiny over reported allegations of financial and sexual misconduct, which Hegseth denied.[2] The Senate's confirmation vote itself was tied 50–50; Vice President JD Vance cast the tie-breaking vote, confirming Hegseth on January 24, 2025.[4]

Correction on the record: Hegseth's initial disclosure filing listed a February 2023 speaking fee from the American Legislative Exchange Council as $150,000. A Hegseth spokesperson and an ALEC spokesperson both told reporters this was a typo and the actual fee was $15,000 — the source PDF filing itself was not amended.[2] Because that gap is between the primary filing and after-the-fact spokesperson statements rather than two independently reported figures, it isn't broken out as its own line above; the $900,000 speaking-fee aggregate reflects reporting after the correction.[2]
The disclosure also lists dozens of individual stock holdings valued $1,001–$50,000 each, including positions in defense contractors Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman.[1] Hegseth's ethics agreement does not commit to divesting these holdings; instead, he agreed to monitor their value against the threshold that would require divestiture.[2]
