Claim 1 — The Big COVID Post (July 29)
"Many more people died of Covid under the Biden Administration than under the Trump Administration. 'Operation Warp Speed' was a SPECTACULAR SUCCESS, in fact, many say, one of the most successful things ever done by an American President. I overrode Fauci on this. His ideas were CRAZY! Also, I said from the beginning that the Virus came from the Wuhan Laboratory in China. Fauci strongly disagreed, always trying to protect China. I Inherited Fauci, who was there since the 1980's, but with each passing day, relied less and less on him. He made too many bad calls, like on MASKS. Remember at the beginning he was an anti-masker. He then switched to a super-masker. In any event I didn't let him shut the Country down, although he wanted to. I went the Federalist way, and let the governors decide. The Republican governors did a much better job than the Dumocrats. Fauci was largely taken out of play, and then along came Sleepy Joe Biden, who made Fauci a 'King!' I called Biden to tell him Fauci was no good, either didn't have a clue, or was dishonest. The call was well received, but sadly,not acted on. Biden went on to give Fauci vast destructive power. COVID Deaths: The Raw-vs-Rate Distinction
The claim that "many more people died of Covid under the Biden Administration" is true in raw numbers and false in context.

The raw total is higher under Biden. But Biden served more than three times as long into the pandemic as Trump did. When researchers at Science Feedback adjusted for the length of each administration's pandemic exposure, the picture reversed: Trump's presidency averaged approximately 8,359 COVID deaths per week, while Biden's averaged approximately 3,940 per week, a rate roughly 112% higher under Trump.[1]
Put differently: it took 54 weeks of the Trump administration to accumulate 455,563 deaths. It took another 54 weeks of the Biden administration to match that same total. That is not a better performance. It is the same rate, followed by a sustained decline in later Biden years as vaccines reached the population. The claim, taken without a rate adjustment, strips the comparison of its most relevant dimension.
Operation Warp Speed and Fauci's Role
The core characterization of Operation Warp Speed as a major success is well-supported. Launched on May 15, 2020, the federal partnership with pharmaceutical companies compressed a typical 8-to-12-year vaccine development timeline into roughly seven months, producing two authorized vaccines by December 2020.[2] Government contracts and Bloomberg analysis confirmed the program invested approximately $18 billion and secured agreements for 455 million doses.[3] Credible economic analyses have credited it with saving over $1 trillion in health-care costs through hospitalization avoidance.
The more specific claim, that Trump "overrode Fauci" on Warp Speed because "his ideas were CRAZY," is not corroborated by the documentary record. Fauci was a consistent public supporter of accelerated vaccine development throughout the pandemic; there is no documented episode in which he opposed the program's core mission and was overruled by Trump. The framing implies Fauci resisted vaccines, which is at odds with his role and public statements during 2020. The disagreements between Fauci and the administration were documented on other fronts (reopening timelines, mask policy, social distancing), not on whether to pursue vaccines at speed.
Lab Leak: What Fauci Actually Said
Trump did raise China and Wuhan as the virus's origin early in the pandemic, including as early as April 2020. Whether he "said from the beginning that the Virus came from the Wuhan Laboratory" specifically (as opposed to China more generally) is a matter of the exact statements, which varied.
Fauci's position on lab leak is more nuanced than "strongly disagreed, always trying to protect China." Fauci's diary, released by Sen. Rand Paul on July 26–27, 2026,[4] shows that on February 1, 2020, during a call with leading virologists, Fauci wrote there was "not total agreement" about the virus's origins, and he personally wrote that he was "almost certain" the virus evolved naturally, though he kept "an open mind about the possibility of a lab leak." That is skepticism of the lab leak theory, not a cover-up of evidence for it.
More substantially, the diary and congressional records show Fauci and NIH Director Francis Collins encouraged virologists who had expressed lab-leak concerns on the February 1 call to subsequently author a paper, "The Proximal Origin of SARS-CoV-2," published in Nature Medicine in March 2020, that argued against a lab origin. That paper was sent to Fauci for review before publication.[5] Republican-led House committee investigations concluded this coordination raised serious questions about whether the scientific consensus was shaped by institutional pressure rather than evidence alone.
The claim that Fauci was "always trying to protect China" is an interpretation, not a documented fact. What is documented is that Fauci consistently advocated for the natural-spillover hypothesis and discouraged lab-leak discussion in early 2020, in ways that went beyond the available evidence at the time. Whether that reflects China-protection or scientific judgment is contested; the diary has not resolved the question.
Masks: The Flip and the Reason for It
On the masks claim, Trump's factual recollection is accurate. Fauci said on CBS 60 Minutes on March 8, 2020: "There's no reason to be walking around with a mask."[6] By April 3, 2020, after the CDC reversed its guidance, Fauci became a consistent advocate for masking.
What changed was not Fauci's integrity but the scientific picture. By late March 2020, evidence of asymptomatic transmission, not well-characterized in January and February, had become clearer, making mask use by the general public more defensible. Simultaneously, early 2020 public health messaging against masks had been shaped partly by a need to preserve scarce N95 supply for healthcare workers. Fauci's own March 31 diary entry, two days before the CDC shift, reads: "We probably were too strong in saying masks do not work."[7] That entry shows Fauci privately concluded he had overstated anti-mask messaging, not that masks were a deliberate deception.
The Trump post's framing ("he was an anti-masker. He then switched to a super-masker") is accurate on the sequence. It omits the reason and treats a science-driven course correction as evidence of dishonesty.
The Lockdown Claim and Fauci's Diary
The claim that Trump "didn't let him shut the Country down, although he wanted to" has received new evidentiary support from the released diary entries. Fauci's diary shows he privately recommended lockdown measures to local officials during the pandemic, including advising New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to close city schools (March 15, 2020), close bars and restaurants, and support a citywide shelter-in-place order (March 20, 2020).[8] A November 2020 entry documents Fauci supporting a three-week Los Angeles County lockdown. He also pushed, in late March 2020, to extend the initial "15 days to slow the spread" to 30 days.
These entries do show Fauci recommending shutdowns at local and state levels. However, "Fauci wanted to shut the Country down" overstates the centralization: Fauci was advising governors and mayors, not directly lobbying Trump to declare a federal national lockdown. The Trump administration's federalist approach of deferring to governors is accurately characterized. Whether it was the better approach is a separate question from whether Fauci pushed for the opposite.
Republican Governors: The Evidence Is the Opposite
The claim that "The Republican governors did a much better job than the Dumocrats" is the post's most directly contradicted assertion. Multiple peer-reviewed studies reached the opposite conclusion.
An ABC News analysis of CDC data found that COVID death rates in Trump-voting states were more than 38% higher than in Biden-voting states after widespread vaccine availability.[9] A 2023 study in The Milbank Quarterly found that states with Republican governors had substantially higher mortality increases during the COVID pandemic compared with Democratic-governor states.[10] A study in the journal Preventive Medicine found Republican-governed counties had higher excess COVID death rates than Democratic-governed ones.
The states that never issued statewide masking mandates were all Republican-led. The states with the ten lowest vaccination rates were nine-of-ten Republican-voting. After vaccines became widely available, the death-rate gap widened in Republican-led states rather than narrowing, driven by lower vaccination uptake. The evidence on this specific sub-claim runs firmly counter to Trump's assertion.
The Trump-Biden Call: Unverified
Trump's claim that he "called Biden to tell him Fauci was no good" and that "the call was well received" has no independent corroboration. The documented record of Trump's final direct conversation with Fauci, as described in Fauci's diary, does not mention any subsequent call by Trump to Biden warning about Fauci. The diary entry describes Trump's November 2020 call to Fauci himself, during which Trump expressed frustration with Fauci and called Biden "that f---er." There is no public record of Trump placing a transition call to Biden about Fauci.
Claim 2 — The Basketball-Pitch Post (July 28)
"Fauci told everyone he was a great basketball player, so I assumed that he would be easily able to throw a ball to Home Plate. It turned out that he was a phony on that, just like he was on everything else (See below!). He was a terrible 'athlete,' and this is, by far, the worst throw I have ever seen in years of watching first pitches! President DONALD J. TRUMP"
The first pitch itself is not in dispute. On July 24, 2020, Fauci threw out the ceremonial first pitch for the Washington Nationals' pandemic-delayed season opener against the New York Yankees. The ball sailed wide left and landed well short of home plate; the throw went viral and was widely mocked at the time.[11]
The misleading element is the premise: "Fauci told everyone he was a great basketball player." According to multiple outlets that investigated the claim, no such statement by Fauci exists. What does exist is a remark by Trump himself. At an April 2020 White House briefing, Trump said of Fauci: "He was a great basketball player, did anybody know that? He was a little on the short side for the NBA, but he was talented."[12]
Fauci was, in fact, captain of the varsity basketball team at Manhattan's Regis High School in 1958. But boasting of that athletic pedigree in the lead-up to the 2020 first pitch was Trump, not Fauci. Trump's July 28 post attributes Trump's own six-year-old words to Fauci, then uses that misattribution to call Fauci "a phony."
The post's larger implication, that athletic mediocrity proves professional dishonesty ("just like he was on everything else"), is rhetorical, not factual. It is timed to coincide with the July 29 Senate hearing, serving as pre-testimony framing rather than analysis of Fauci's pandemic record.
Claim 3 — Fifth Amendment at the Senate Hearing
The claim is accurate on every material point. Fauci appeared before the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee on July 29, 2026, subpoenaed by chairman Rand Paul (R-KY).[13] Fauci invoked his Fifth Amendment right against self-incrimination repeatedly throughout the hearing, on advice of his attorneys. In an opening statement, he criticized Paul for what he described as "an unhinged obsession" with calling for his prosecution and said he was invoking Fifth specifically because Paul's stated goal was to see him "behind bars."[14]
The hearing was Fauci's first Fifth Amendment invocation after more than 250 congressional appearances over a career dating to the HIV/AIDS era. In a dramatic moment, Paul had Fauci's attorney, David Schertler, escorted from the hearing room when Schertler attempted to interject on his client's behalf.
The underlying legal context: Biden preemptively pardoned Fauci in January 2025 against potential politically motivated prosecution. Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. said days before the hearing that he believed Fauci might lie before the committee, potentially opening him to perjury charges regardless of the pardon. Fauci's attorneys concluded that any answer under oath, truthful or otherwise, carried legal risk given the stated intentions of committee leadership.
The Strongest Case for the Other Side
A fair reading of the diary evidence strengthens several Trump claims more than the verdicts above might suggest. The diary confirms Fauci was involved in persuading local officials to implement lockdown measures. That is more than he publicly acknowledged for years afterward, even if it falls short of a national recommendation. The coordination around the "Proximal Origin" paper, sent to Fauci before publication, is a documented departure from normal scientific independence, whatever its motivation. The mask reversal, from "there's no reason to be walking around with a mask" to consistent mask advocacy, is real, regardless of whether the reason was sound. And the raw COVID death count being higher under Biden is arithmetically true; Trump is right that the headline number favors him.
These are the facts underlying Trump's framing. Where the framing becomes misleading is not in inventing facts but in omitting rate adjustment on deaths, misrepresenting the Warp Speed record as Fauci-opposed, misattributing the basketball comment to Fauci, and stating as fact (Republican governors did better) what the mortality data contradicts directly.

- Perjury exposure post-Fifth: Fauci's Fifth Amendment invocations limit his legal exposure but do not end the committee's investigation. Watch for whether Paul's committee pursues a criminal referral or whether DOJ pursues charges despite the Biden pardon's scope; legal analysts differ on whether a preemptive pardon covers future perjury charges for testimony not yet given.
- Full diary release: The 1,141 pages released July 26–27 are Rand Paul's selection. The full diary may contain entries that complicate or contradict Paul's framing. Courts or further FOIA requests could force a broader release.
- Lab-leak commission: A formal U.S. commission on COVID origins has been proposed. If convened, it would have subpoena authority broader than congressional committees. Fauci's diary correspondence with virologists before the Proximal Origin paper would likely be central evidence.
- 2026 midterms: The hearing is occurring in a midterm-election year. Republican pursuit of Fauci accountability and Democratic framing of political persecution will both intensify through November 2026.
